Managing Michigan's Wildlife
A Landowner's Guide
|
The State of Michigan is blessed with abundant forests, fields, streams, rivers, lakes and other water resources. Properly stewarded, the diversity of these natural resources provide quality and diverse habitat to support a rich, healthy, vibrant and diverse species of wildlife. In Michigan, some 21% of the forestlands are state owned and 14% are federally owned. That leaves a full 65% of the state's forest resource as privately owned. Whether our outdoor interests include hunting, fishing and trapping, bird watching, camping, hiking, biking, snowmobiling, a drive in the country or quietly enjoying the serentity of a cabin in the woods or on a lake, each of us can do our part as stewards to better ensure that these resources remain healthy and intact for the ages.
While this guide was primarily created to support a better understanding of Michigan's temperate forest ecosystems, the basics of habitat enhancement and wildlife management can be equally applied to virtually any similar combination of supporting ecosystem and biosphere.
We hope that you will find the following pages helpful in understanding and enjoying your outdoor activities.
